Books about new findings of Science supports "new age" beliefs have been common since at least then The Tao of Physics: an exploration of the parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism by Fritjof Capra, published many years ago. The most common example is the film "what the Bleep do we know?"
The emphasis has, however, in physics, especially quantum physics. The book explores cell biology instead, although he also tries to rope in quantum physics. The author is a cell biologist with impressive credentials.
Dissertation central--on the scientific level--is that our cells (and therefore us) is driven by our DNA or genes. Rather, they react to their environment.
He does not explain this, but I have to take there are genetic limits or boundaries. Our cells cannot suddenly decide to change our eye color from blue to Brown. If we are fully grown, don't believe they can grow our skeleton, even if we decide we want to be basketball players.
This is a direct challenge for the majority of biology, which reveres our DNA and genes that control mechanisms over who and what we are.
But in recent years, there has been a new branch of biology called epigenetics, which studies how our cells can choose to read or not read certain parts of our genes.
For example, the presence of certain genes is correlated with the possibility of developing some cancers later in life. Newspaper stories makes it sound like if women with the gene is "predetermined" to get breast cancer.
Lipton said that depending on the surrounding area, cells can choose to read or not read these genes and therefore develops cancer--or not.
I think it is quite reasonable. I think I first encountered the term "epigenetics" when I read a book about resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grapes and grape products (e.g., red wine). Research on resveratrol suggests that help our cells that express the healthy parts of our genes at the same time ignore the unhealthy parts.
But here is where the author's case, deplete. He says the cell's environment includes electrical energy (probably true), and this is controlled by our conviction.
And he gives in quantum mechanics to explain how our brains communicating with our cells to determine their actions.
It is not easy to follow, because he is a good writer and uses many scientific details, but this process is simply not the same step by step explained in detail he gives to cell biology. He makes many logical hop.
I am no expert, but don't believe quantum physics also apply at the molecular level, which is the basis of our biology. I thought it only applied to subatomic particles. When atoms combine to form molecules, they are subject and behave in accordance with the legislation in biochemistry.
In one chapter he goes into detail about the importance of parents children positive programming, from their own health. He mentions many statistics showing that children exposed in utero on alcohol and tobacco are suffering from health problems later.
He seems to move from rejecting the determinism of genes adoption of determinism of parents ' influence.
In the end the police he really by acknowledging that he did not have a way to modify our subconscious programming-that controls our conviction.
Instead he redirects us to check out a program created by someone else.
There is a lot of interesting material here. I think it raises lots of interesting and valuable questions, but it does not make his case.
